Hail is the exposure that sets this county apart
DFW sits in the hail belt and Tarrant County sits squarely inside it, taking storms as hard as anywhere in the metroplex. Storm season runs roughly March through June, and a single supercell tracking east across the county can put a decade of wear on a roof edge in fifteen minutes. Aluminum gutter dents. That part is cosmetic and by itself is not a reason to replace anything. What is not cosmetic is a trough bottom driven flat and out of pitch, hangers pulled loose from the fascia by the weight of accumulated stones and water, and downspouts crushed closed at the elbow so the run has nowhere to drain.
After a significant storm, three things are worth checking from the ground. Look for fresh water staining on fascia or siding behind the gutter line, which means water is going over or behind instead of through. Look down the length of each run for a visible sag or a section that has dropped at one end. And look at the downspouts for crimping or separation at the elbows. Any of those changes how the system drains, and none of them fix themselves.
Hail is also why material choice is a live question in Tarrant County rather than a default. Heavier-gauge aluminum resists denting better than the thin stock that comes on production homes. Steel resists it better still, part of why we specify steel on commercial buildings and on residential jobs where the owner has been through two hail replacements already. Fort Worth’s historic districts need period-correct work
Fort Worth carries a depth of early-twentieth-century residential architecture as deep as anywhere in the metroplex. Around Fairmount and the near south side you have Craftsman bungalows, Prairie-style homes, and Victorian cottages from the 1900s through the 1920s, most of them on their original framing. That architecture came with half-round gutter, not K-style, and hanging a modern Ogee profile on a 1912 bungalow reads wrong from the curb. It is usually out of scale with the eave detail it is fastened to.
We install half-round on these homes, in aluminum where budget governs and in copper where the owner wants the material the house was designed around. Half-round drains cleanly because it has no interior corners for debris to pack into. Under heavy pecan and live oak canopy that is a real advantage. It also needs different hanger hardware, since a half-round trough carries on brackets or shanks rather than the hidden hangers a K-style uses. That hardware is not something a crew improvises on the spot.
Fascia condition is the real gate on historic work. On a hundred-year-old home the fascia board has usually been through several gutter systems, and every one of them left holes. Spike-and-ferrule systems in particular chew the wood out. Before we hang anything we assess whether the board will hold a fastener, and when it will not, the carpentry comes first. Skipping that step is how a beautiful copper system ends up on the lawn after one wet spring.
Box gutters, conductor heads, and copper
Some period homes and a great many older commercial buildings in Fort Worth do not have a hung gutter at all. They have a built-in box gutter, framed into the roof structure itself and lined rather than fastened on. A box gutter cannot be replaced with a K-style run without altering the roof edge, and it should not be. It gets relined and rebuilt. We do built-in box gutter work throughout Tarrant County, and it is a different trade from hanging seamless aluminum.
Conductor heads, the open collector boxes that sit at the top of a downspout, do two useful things on this architecture. They relieve pressure when a long run delivers more water than a single drop can swallow. On a high-end home they read as part of the elevation rather than as plumbing. Copper conductor heads on a copper system are a specification we get asked for regularly on restoration work in Fort Worth and on custom builds in Westlake and Southlake.
Copper costs $25 to $40 per linear foot installed, three to five times what the same run costs in aluminum. What you buy for that is a system that will outlive the roof over it, a patina that most owners of period homes actually want, and joints that are soldered rather than sealed. On a house that is going to be there in fifty years it is a rational purchase. On a tract home it is not, and we will say so.
Commercial and industrial buildings across the county
Tarrant County carries an enormous amount of non-residential building stock, from downtown Fort Worth office and the Stockyards district to the distribution and logistics corridor running north toward Alliance and Haslet, plus older manufacturing along the east-west rail lines. Commercial drainage is a different engineering problem than residential. Roof areas are measured in tens of thousands of square feet, and the roofs are low-slope rather than pitched. Water has to be collected and moved horizontally before it ever reaches a downspout.
On those buildings we work in heavy-gauge steel, oversized trough, box gutter, and scupper-and-collector detail rather than 5-inch aluminum. Downspout sizing goes up accordingly, and outlet spacing gets tighter because a low-slope roof gives you no help from gravity. Retail and light industrial along I-30, I-820, and SH 121 through the mid-cities has its own recurring failure: original systems sized for the building’s first roof, never revisited when the roof was replaced with a different membrane or a different slope. If you own or manage property here and your parking lot floods at the building line during a normal storm, the gutter is usually the cause, not the drainage.
Apartments, rentals, and multifamily property
Tarrant County holds a large share of the metroplex’s rental housing, concentrated in Arlington around the university and the entertainment corridor, through Euless and Hurst in the mid-cities, and across broad sections of Fort Worth. Multifamily gutter work runs on different logic than owner-occupied residential. A slow overflow goes unreported by the people living in the building, so problems surface as a maintenance ticket about a soggy walkway or a stained soffit months after the actual failure.
For property managers the practical answer is scheduled inspection rather than reactive repair, plus heavier material where the building has stair towers, breezeways, or walkway roofs that concentrate water into a few small collection points. We also see a lot of spike-and-ferrule systems still in service on 1970s and 1980s complexes, and those work loose predictably. Converting to hidden hangers on a screw fastening schedule ends the recurring callback.
Access is the other multifamily variable, and it changes the price more than material does. Two-story walk-ups with landscaping tight to the building, carports blocking ladder placement, or units backing directly onto a fence line all mean slower setup per linear foot. We look at the property and price it accurately instead of quoting a per-foot number that falls apart on the first building.
Northeast Tarrant and the custom roofline problem
Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville, and the higher end of Keller and Grapevine build homes with roofs that are deliberately complicated. Multiple gables, cross hips, dormers, turrets, and roof planes at three different pitches on one elevation. Every one of those junctions is a valley, and every valley is a funnel. A valley that collects 600 square feet of roof and delivers it into an eight-foot section of gutter will overtop that section during any real storm, regardless of how well the rest of the house drains.
The answer is not to upsize the whole house. It is to treat each concentration point on its own: an oversized outlet directly under the valley, a second downspout on that elevation, a splash guard or diverter where the valley discharges onto a lower roof, and in some cases a conductor head to take the impact. That analysis is why we measure these homes rather than pricing them by footage. It is also the single most common thing missing on a custom home already re-guttered once by someone working from a total.
These northeast Tarrant County neighborhoods also carry mature Cross Timbers post oak, cedar elm, and live oak on generous lots, so debris load is real. Cedar elm and live oak drop the fine, stiff debris that defeats a coarse screen, along with heavy spring catkins that pass straight through a wide slot. Which guard you pick matters more than whether you have one. Post oak litter is large enough that a heavy-gauge screen handles it on its own. Where the elm and live oak dominate, fine micro-mesh is the product, because a coarse screen just moves the clog from the trough to the mesh.
Choosing a material for a Tarrant County roof
Aluminum is the standard and the right answer for most homes. It does not rust, it takes a baked finish that holds color, and we form it seamless on-site from a single coil so a 50-foot elevation gets one continuous piece. Its weakness here is hail, and we move to a heavier gauge as a matter of course in the parts of the county that have been hit repeatedly.
Steel costs roughly $9 to $20 per linear foot and buys impact resistance and rigidity. It is the default on commercial work, on long spans that would otherwise deflect, and on residential jobs where the owner is prioritizing durability over cost. It is heavier to hang and the fastening schedule reflects that.
Copper at $25 to $40 per linear foot is a period and architectural choice. It belongs on historic Fort Worth homes, on custom estates in the northeast of the county, and anywhere half-round and conductor heads are part of the design intent. Sizing by housing era
Tarrant County spans more construction eras than any county we serve, and each one has a characteristic failure. Homes from the 1920s through the 1950s carry original fascia and were often fitted with 4-inch or narrow 5-inch trough, undersized by modern standards and usually well past service life. On these we are frequently replacing wood before metal.
The 1960s through 1980s ranch stock that fills Hurst, Euless, Forest Hill, Everman, and large parts of Arlington has long, low roof planes that shed slowly, and 5-inch K-style is often adequate. What fails on these houses is fastening and pitch, not capacity, so a well-executed repair often beats a replacement. The 1990s and 2000s two-story brick that dominates Keller, Colleyville, and north Fort Worth has taller elevations and more valleys, and 6-inch is commonly warranted.
Construction from roughly 2010 forward, most of far north Tarrant County, comes with steeper pitches and larger uninterrupted planes. Those homes need 6-inch trough with 3-inch by 4-inch downspouts as a baseline, and the downspout upgrade alone moves about twice the water of a 2×3. Sizing for peak intensity is the correct approach in North Texas, because our 37 to 40 inches a year arrives in short violent bursts rather than steady drizzle.
The parts of the job you cannot see from the curb
Most gutter failures in this county are not failures of the gutter. They are failures of what the gutter is attached to and how it was hung. The fascia board is the foundation of the entire system, and on Tarrant County’s older housing it has often been penetrated by two or three previous installations. Wood that has taken on water behind an old spiked gutter looks fine from the ground and crumbles the moment a screw goes into it. We check it before we quote, and when it needs replacing we say so in the estimate rather than discovering it on install day.
Drip edge is the second invisible piece. If the roof’s drip edge does not lap into the back of the trough, water follows the underside of the shingle and runs down the fascia behind the gutter. That is how a perfectly clean system still rots the board it hangs on. Around Grapevine Lake, where wind drives rain at an angle, this detail decides whether the installation works at all.
Then there is pitch and hanger spacing. A run needs enough fall to move water to the outlet but not so much that it looks crooked against a level soffit line, and hangers need to be close enough that the front lip cannot flex under a full trough or a hail load. We tighten spacing on long spans, on steel, and on any elevation with a valley dumping into it. None of this shows up in a photograph of finished rain gutters, and all of it decides how long they last.
The numbers a Tarrant County gutter run gets built to
Hail sets most of the numbers on a Tarrant County job, but not the first one. Start with the trough itself: a run formed in one piece has no mid-span lap to work open, which matters on the long low mid-cities ranch elevations where one back wall can want 60 feet of metal. The corners, outlets and end caps are still sealed, and we would rather say that plainly than sell a joint-free system nobody makes.
Coil gauge is the decision hail forces on a Tarrant County gutter. We hang .027 aluminum as the standard residential specification and specify .032 on exposed elevations and long runs, which here means houses that have already been through a replacement or two and open ground in the far north of Fort Worth. Heavier stock does not make a gutter hailproof. It keeps the trough bottom nearer the shape it was formed in, and shape is what pitch depends on.
The rest is spacing. Hidden hangers go in at 24 inches on center and tighten to about 18 inches on exposed runs and under heavy load, which includes any gutter carrying hailstones and water after a March cell. Fall is a quarter inch per ten feet of run, and a drop goes in every 30 to 40 feet. On the short eaves south and southeast of Fort Worth there is no length in which to make up a bad slope, so we reset the line rather than reuse it.
Cities and communities we serve in Tarrant County
These are working notes on the Tarrant County cities we cover most, not a directory. Each one reflects what our crews plan for at that address.
Fort Worth is the widest range of work we do anywhere: 1900s-1920s bungalows in the historic districts that want half-round and copper, mid-century ranch across the west and south sides, downtown and Stockyards commercial buildings with box gutters and internal collection, and brand-new two-story construction in the far north. There is no single Fort Worth specification, which is exactly why we measure before we quote.
Arlington is fifty years of shade-tree growth over long, low 1960s-through-1980s rooflines, with apartments, campus buildings, and the commercial density of the entertainment district sitting around it, so a week there can take in a ranch reroof and a strip center on the same day. Guards are an easy recommendation in those older neighborhoods. The commercial side is steel and box gutter work.
Southlake is custom-roofline country. Large homes with multiple gables, deep valleys, mixed pitches, and mature oak on big lots. Valley concentration is the defining problem and the fix is targeted outlets rather than blanket upsizing. Architectural standards are common in these neighborhoods, so we supply the color spec sheet for approval before we order coil.
Westlake barely has density. Estate homes and corporate campuses sit far apart on rolling terrain, and the roof runs that come with them are long enough to need draining at both ends, usually with conductor heads to take the pressure off the collection points. Copper and half-round come up more often here than anywhere else in the county except historic Fort Worth.
Keller is 1990s and 2000s two-story brick on wooded, rolling lots. That combination is unusual, because it hands you the capacity problem of a tall elevation and the debris problem of a real canopy at the same address. Keller is one of the few places in Tarrant County where we routinely recommend both 6-inch trough and guards on the same house.
Grapevine comes in two halves, a historic Main Street of period commercial buildings running up against lakeside neighborhoods on Grapevine Lake. The Main Street block is box gutter and rebuild work. The lake side takes sustained wind off open water, which drives rain behind poorly detailed gutters, so drip edge integration and tighter hanger spacing matter on those homes.
Colleyville is heavy canopy on large lots, with custom homes sitting under mature hardwood. Debris volume here is among the highest in the county. It is also fine debris rather than big leaves, and that rules out coarse screens on most of these houses. Micro-mesh gutter guard systems and a real cleaning cadence both earn their cost on these properties.
Hurst is 1960s and 1970s ranch under the full canopy that age brings, plus a good deal of retail around the North East Mall area. Long low roofs and fifty-year-old trees make the classic case for guards or a firm cleaning schedule. They also make it worth checking whether the fascia has taken on water behind an old spiked system.
The rest of the county divides roughly in two. The mid-cities belt between Fort Worth and DFW Airport is 1960s through 1980s single-story stock on compact lots, with a great deal of multifamily mixed in and side yards narrow enough that ladder access shapes the estimate more than material choice does. South and southeast of Fort Worth the housing is smaller and older still: post-war homes with short eaves, original 5-inch trough, and fascia that has usually failed before the metal did. Short eaves leave no length to make up a bad slope, so we reset pitch on most of those jobs rather than reusing the old line.
West and north of the city the pattern reverses. Newer subdivisions with steep two-story roofs sit next to warehouse and logistics buildings, and the two need opposite specifications: heavy steel and oversized collection on the distribution side, 6-inch trough with 3×4 downspouts on the houses. Guards are usually premature out there because the trees have not grown in yet. On creek-adjacent acreage south of Arlington the grade often falls back toward the house, which makes discharge routing more important than trough size and puts a buried line to daylight on the estimate.

Clay soil and where the water goes
Most of Tarrant County sits on shallower clay over limestone rather than the deep Blackland Prairie clay further east, and it still moves enough to matter, expanding when it takes on water and contracting hard in drought. Repeatedly soaking one corner of a foundation while the opposite corner stays dry is how you get differential slab movement, and slab repair costs many multiples of what a drainage correction does. This is the reason downspout discharge matters more in DFW than it does in most of the country, and it is the part of the job most often skipped.
On a standard suburban Tarrant County lot we run downspout extensions far enough out that the discharge point is well past the foundation’s zone of influence, generally toward a swale, a drive edge, or the curb. On acreage in Kennedale, Haslet, and the county’s western edge, we bury the line and daylight it at a low point, or terminate at a pop-up emitter clear of the mown area. On historic Fort Worth lots with pier-and-beam construction the goal shifts slightly: keep the crawl space dry and keep water off the perimeter beam.
Put a figure on it and the argument gets easier to hold. The bare minimum is four feet out from the wall. Six feet is the working target, and ten is the number we recommend wherever the clay runs deep rather than shallow. Anything that ends two feet out is not an extension, it is a splash block with ambitions.
Grade is the other variable. A downspout that discharges onto ground sloping back toward the house has accomplished nothing. Part of every estimate we write includes looking at where the water ends up, not just where it leaves the roof.
How often should Tarrant County gutters be cleaned?
It depends entirely on canopy, and canopy in this county varies from none to complete. Under mature post oak and live oak in Colleyville, Keller, Hurst, or an established Arlington street, plan on twice a year at minimum: a pass in late fall after the drop finishes, and a pass in spring for catkins and seed. Some heavily wooded lots need three.
In new construction in Haslet or the newer north Fort Worth subdivisions, two visits still earn their keep, though on those houses the work is more about checking pitch, hangers, and sealant than about removing debris. Commercial low-slope roofs are their own case and should be inspected before and after storm season regardless of tree cover, because a blocked scupper on a flat roof creates a structural load problem rather than just an overflow. What gutter work costs in Tarrant County
Our pricing is consistent across the metroplex. Seamless aluminum installs at $4.50 to $12 per linear foot. Steel runs roughly $9 to $20 per linear foot. Copper runs $25 to $40 per linear foot. Where a given job lands inside those bands depends on total linear footage, roof height, corner and outlet count, and how difficult the access is.
A typical single-story home with 150 to 200 linear feet of eave, which describes a great deal of Arlington, Hurst, Euless, Forest Hill, and Everman, sits inside the $600 to $2,750 whole-home installed range. What moves a Tarrant County house toward the upper end of it more often than anything else is the hanger schedule. We set hangers at 24 inches on center as standard and tighten to about 18 inches on exposed runs and under heavy load, and the west and north elevations on the Grand Prairie side of the county earn that tightening regularly.
Going from 24 inches to 18 puts roughly a third more hangers and a third more fasteners into the same run, and on the complex custom rooflines common in Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville, and Keller that is real labor rather than a rounding error. It buys a run that holds its pitch through a gust front instead of pulling off the fascia. Cleaning is a separate service and prices off ladder work: how many setups the elevations need, how high each one sits, and how much has to be bagged and carried down. Guard pricing follows the product and the trough profile it has to fit.
Commercial and historic restoration work is quoted individually, because neither one prices sensibly by the foot. A box gutter reline and a 40,000 square foot warehouse retrofit have almost nothing in common with a suburban re-gutter. Every estimate is free and every one is measured on-site. After the storm
When a spring cell tears a run loose or a downspout separates in the middle of a wet week, waiting three weeks for a routine appointment means three weeks of water at the foundation. Questions we hear from Tarrant County homeowners
Hail dented my gutters. Do they have to be replaced?
Not automatically. Surface dents in the face of an aluminum gutter are cosmetic and do not affect drainage. Replacement becomes the right call when the trough bottom has been flattened out of pitch, when hangers have pulled and the run has dropped, or when downspouts have been crushed closed. You will know which of those you have before anything is quoted.
My house is in Fairmount. Can I get period-correct gutters?
Yes. Half-round profiles in aluminum or copper, with the correct bracket hardware and conductor heads where the design calls for them, are work we do regularly on Fort Worth’s historic homes. On a house of that age we assess the fascia first, because new metal on failed wood does not last.
What is a box gutter and can it be converted to normal gutter?
A box gutter is built into the roof structure rather than hung from the fascia, and it is common on older commercial buildings and some period homes. It can technically be abandoned in favor of a hung system, but doing so usually requires altering the roof edge and rarely looks right. Relining and rebuilding the existing box is the better answer in most cases.
Do I need 6-inch gutters or is 5-inch enough?
Five-inch is often adequate on a 1960s or 1970s single-story ranch with long low roof planes, which describes much of Hurst, Euless, and older Arlington. Six-inch with 3×4 downspouts is the right specification on two-story brick, on steep modern pitches, and on any elevation where multiple valleys converge into a short run.
Are gutter guards worth it in Tarrant County?
Under mature canopy in Colleyville, Keller, Hurst, or an established Arlington neighborhood, yes. In new construction in Haslet or a 2015-forward north Fort Worth subdivision, not yet. The species matters as much as the density: under cedar elm and live oak it is micro-mesh or nothing, and post oak on its own does not justify it.
Can you handle a warehouse or a retail center?
Yes. Commercial work is a large part of what we do as a gutter company in Tarrant County, so heavy-gauge steel, oversized trough, box gutter, scupper and collector work, and lift access are all standard for us. Low-slope roofs need tighter outlet spacing than pitched roofs because gravity does less of the work.
There is a pecan over the back of the house. How often does it need clearing?
Four visits a year under heavy pecan, against the two to three we treat as normal elsewhere. Pecan trails the whole calendar, dropping husks and twigs after the elm and oak litter has already gone in, so a single fall cleaning done in November leaves you with a loaded gutter by January. Husks are also bulky enough to bridge an outlet on their own and hold water behind them.
If one section of a seamless gutter is damaged, does the whole length come off?
Usually not. The damaged section can be cut out and a new piece rolled and joined in place, which leaves you two sealed joints where there were none. On a face visible from the street some owners would rather we replace that elevation end to end so one seamless length carries the whole wall, and on a run already out of pitch that is the better call anyway. We price both and let you choose.
Does my HOA need to approve the color?
In some northeast Tarrant neighborhoods, yes. We provide the manufacturer color and spec sheet so you can submit it, and we hold the install date until you have approval. We do not order coil against an unapproved color.
