Cedar holds up better and costs more. PVC and composite trim board will not rot at all and holds paint indefinitely, which is worth the premium on an elevation that has already failed once, though it moves more with temperature and has to be gapped and fastened accordingly. The Aluminum Fascia Wrap Question

Coil-wrapped fascia is common on houses of this age and it is not automatically a bad thing. Wrapping sound, dry wood is a legitimate way to stop repainting a board every few years. Wrapping wet or already-rotting wood is one of the most common cover-ups in exterior work, because it hides the failure completely and seals moisture in against the board where it can keep working. If your fascia is wrapped and your gutters are sagging, we are going to want to pull a section and look underneath before quoting. Better to find out now than after new metal is hanging on it.

Why New Gutters on Bad Fascia Fail Twice

The mechanics are simple. A hidden hanger holds by screw threads engaging maybe an inch of solid wood behind the trough. If that inch has lost its fiber, the threads have nothing to pull against, and the screw holds only until something loads it. Nothing about the quality of the gutter changes that.

The load arrives every time it rains. A full 5-inch K-style gutter carries roughly three pounds of water per linear foot, and a 6-inch carries closer to five.
