Long copper runs need that movement accommodated rather than pinned rigidly at both ends, and joints on high-end copper work are traditionally soldered instead of sealed with a bead of caulk that will fail in a decade. A painted finish stays exactly the color it was painted, so it will never track with genuine copper aging elsewhere on the same house, and a deep scratch shows bright aluminum rather than more copper.
That trade is often perfectly reasonable on a secondary elevation, on a run twenty-five feet up, or anywhere nobody stands still and looks at it. It is a poor trade six feet from where guests wait at a front door, and it is a bad trade on a house that already has real copper somewhere on it, because the two will drift apart in appearance every year. The estimate puts each run in one category or the other.
Half-Round Looks Right. Here Is the Trade You Are Making.
Half-round is the correct profile on a great many Westlake elevations, particularly on stone, on stucco, and on anything with a Mediterranean or traditional European vocabulary. It is also the profile most likely to be installed at the wrong capacity, because people specify it by nominal size and assume it behaves like the K-style it replaced.
It does not. A K-style trough is essentially a rectangle with a decorative front, so the cross-section is close to fully usable. A half-round is a semicircle, and a semicircle of the same nominal width holds noticeably less water. Swap a 6-inch K-style for a 6-inch half-round on a large roof plane and you have quietly reduced capacity on a house that needed the capacity in the first place.
The fix is straightforward once you know to apply it. Go up a size, add outlets, and use round downspouts sized to the load rather than the smallest one that fits the outlet. Half-round also has one real functional advantage worth naming: the continuous curve has no inside corner for sediment to lodge in, so it self-cleans better than a K-style profile does under the same debris load.
- Size up rather than across. If the roof plane wanted a 6-inch K-style, the half-round answer is generally larger, not equal.
- More outlets. On a long estate elevation, two properly placed drops beat one large one every time.
- Round downspouts in matching material, sized against the contributing roof area rather than a default.
- Strap or shank hangers on deliberate centers, since they are visible and since a full half-round carries real weight.

Round Downspouts, and Which Kind
Half-round pairs with a round downspout, and there are two versions of that. Smooth round is the traditional visual match on a formal elevation, and it is what you see on period and European-vocabulary architecture where the downspout is meant to be part of the composition. Corrugated round is stiffer, cheaper, easier to source, and reads utilitarian. At equal diameter the hydraulic difference between them is small, so this is an architectural decision rather than a performance one.
Diameter is not an architectural decision. A round downspout chosen by habit rather than by the roof area feeding it is the single most common bottleneck we find on otherwise well-executed half-round systems. The trough can be beautifully made and correctly pitched, and it will still stand full during a hard spring cell if the drop below it was undersized. We size the downspout against the contributing area first and then pick the style.
Hanging Gutter on Stone and Stucco Without a Wood Fascia
This is the part of Westlake work that catches contractors out. On a conventional house you fasten hidden hangers through the gutter back into a wood fascia board, and the whole system depends on that board being sound. There is a stucco return, a stone band, a built-out cornice, or an open eave with exposed rafter tails and no continuous surface to screw into.
Each of those wants a different answer. Exposed rafter tails mean fastening into the tails themselves on their actual spacing, which may not be the spacing you would choose. A stucco fascia means either finding the structural member behind the stucco or using a fastener rated for the substrate, and every penetration through stucco has to be sealed properly or it becomes a water entry point in the wall assembly rather than just a gutter attachment. Stone requires the right anchor and the discipline to place it in mortar joints rather than through the face of a cut stone.
There is also a decision about whether the gutter hangs on the fascia at all. On deep overhangs with no usable fascia surface, the answer is sometimes a roof-mounted or rafter-mounted bracket that carries the trough at the correct height relative to the roof plane. That is a design decision made at the estimate with the elevation in front of us, not something to improvise from a ladder on install day.
The reason to take this seriously is that a fastening failure on a stone or stucco elevation is not a cheap repair. Pulling a hanger out of a painted pine fascia leaves a hole you fill and paint. There is a standing temptation to set the trough back toward the wall where the attachment is simpler, and a run set back that way will work in a calm rain and miss badly in a driven one.
Open ground compounds it. Westlake has very little built density to break a storm front, so rain here arrives with a horizontal component more often than it does in a tight subdivision. Water leaving a deep eave already has outward travel, and wind adds to it. Positioning against the actual drip line rather than the fascia line is the correction, and on a wide overhang those are two different places.
Long Runs, Long Discharge: Drainage on an Estate Lot
Low density changes the drainage problem in a way that is easy to underestimate. On a quarter-acre subdivision lot, moving water eight or ten feet from the slab gets it clear of the foundation and into a yard that slopes toward the street. On a multi-acre Westlake parcel, the house sits far from any street, the grade may fall away in a direction that does not suit you, and the nearest sensible place to put several thousand gallons can be a genuinely long way from the downspout.
The soil physics are the same everywhere in North Texas and they are not negotiable. Expansive clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks through drought, and repeated wetting and drying at the perimeter of a slab is the mechanism behind most foundation movement in this region. Larger roofs put more water on the ground per storm, so a big house on clay has a bigger problem, not a smaller one.
On a Westlake acreage lot the practical solution is usually a buried line rather than a surface extension, carried well past the structure to a pop-up emitter or a graded low point. That run has to be sized for the volume a large roof produces, pitched consistently over its full length, and given a cleanout so a clog fifty feet from the house is something you can clear rather than dig up. Long buried lines fail quietly, and the first sign is usually water backing up at the base of a downspout.
Irrigation and mature landscape complicate the routing. Established beds, specimen trees, a pool equipment pad, and a stone motor court all constrain where a trench can go. Screening a Half-Round Without Wrecking the Line

A panel that sits proud of the nose of a half-round breaks the one thing the profile was chosen for, which is a clean unbroken curve along the elevation.
What works instead is a screen carried inside the trough line rather than over the top of it, fixed mechanically rather than clipped to a bead that half-round does not have, and specified in a metal that suits what it is sitting in. On a soldered copper system that means not clipping aluminum into it, because copper and aluminum in contact with water running between them will attack the aluminum. Where the gutter is part of the architecture, the screen has to be treated as part of it too.
The debris on a wooded parcel argues for a particular kind of screen. Westlake sits on Grand Prairie and Cross Timbers ground, so the tree that matters on the treed lots is post oak. Its leaves run thick and leathery, three inches across at the small end and often well past five. They mat on top of a screen rather than passing through it, which is a heavy-gauge screening problem and never an argument for micro-mesh. Fine mesh belongs where cedar elm or pine needles are the issue, not where post oak is.
