Hail Season Sets the Calendar for Everything Else

The working year in Arlington runs on storms. The heavy window is roughly March through June, when the same fronts that deliver most of the region’s rainfall also deliver the hail. A second wet stretch arrives in the fall without the same impact risk. Hail does two distinct things to a gutter system, and homeowners usually only notice the first one. The obvious damage is denting. Reading Storm Damage on Your Own Gutters

Most Arlington homeowners can sort cosmetic damage from real failure without getting on a ladder. Walk the perimeter of the house the day after a storm and look for the following, in this order.

  • Deformation of the front bead. The rolled lip along the face of a K-style gutter is what gives the whole run its rigidity. Dents on the flat bottom are cosmetic. A bead that has been flattened or folded changes how the gutter hangs and how it sheds water.
  • Separated seams at the corners. Older sectional gutter is joined every ten feet and at every miter. Impact and vibration open those joints, and a joint that has opened will drip long after the storm passes. Look for a rust line or a mineral stain directly under a miter.
  • Fasteners backing out. If your gutter is held by spikes driven through the front face into the rafter tails, storm vibration and thermal cycling pull them. A spike head standing a quarter inch proud of the gutter face is a run that is already losing its hang.
  • Crumpled or dislodged downspouts. Downspouts take direct hits and also take wind. A crushed section restricts flow far more than its appearance suggests, because you have reduced the cross-sectional area at the exact point where the water is moving fastest.
  • Grit in the trough and at the splash point. A pile of shingle granules where the downspout discharges tells you the roof lost material, which is worth knowing before the next storm.
  • Water staining on fascia and soffit. Dark streaks below the gutter line mean water is getting behind the trough, usually from a run that has lost slope or a hanger that has pulled.

None of that requires a tape measure. If the front bead is intact, the miters are dry, and the hangers are tight, dents alone are not a functional problem and you do not need to replace anything. If two or more of those items show up on the same run, the run is failing and patching it is throwing money at it.

Why Arlington’s Brick Ranch Houses Fail in a Specific Way

The 1960s through 1980s ranch stock that fills central and north Arlington shares a set of characteristics that produce the same handful of gutter problems over and over. The roof planes are long and low. A single run can stretch forty to sixty feet with one downspout at one end, which means water travels a long way at low velocity before it has anywhere to go. Debris that would self-clear on a steeper roof stays put on these.

The original hanging system on most of these houses is a spike and ferrule driven through the front of the gutter into the rafter tail. It was standard for the era and it works until the wood moves. Forty years of Texas heat cycling swells and shrinks that pine fascia, the spike loses its bite, and the gutter starts to sag between fasteners. A sagging run holds water at the low spot, and standing water in an aluminum trough is how the back edge finally corrodes through.

The low eave height on these houses has one advantage and one drawback. The advantage is access: a single-story ranch is straightforward to service and to install on, and the labor cost reflects that. The drawback is splash-back. When a run overflows on a house whose eave is nine feet off the ground, the water lands close to the wall and throws mud and grit onto brick, window sills, and the bottom courses of siding. You can usually read a house’s overflow history off its brick.

The correction on this stock is not exotic. Hidden hangers screwed into solid wood at close spacing replace the spikes and hold the gutter by its back and front edge instead of by a nail through the face. Slope gets reset toward the outlets. On a long run we will usually add a second downspout rather than fight the length. If the fascia itself has gone soft behind the old gutter, that gets addressed before anything new goes up, because new gutter fastened to rotten wood is a warranty claim waiting to happen. Most of this falls under ordinary gutter repair rather than replacement.

South Arlington’s Newer Two-Story Rooflines Are a Different Problem

Head south toward the Mansfield line and the housing changes. Two-story brick with steeper pitches, larger roof planes, and several valleys feeding a limited length of gutter. The physics reverse. Where the ranch stock suffers from slow-moving water on long shallow runs, these houses suffer from too much water arriving too fast in one place.

A valley is a funnel. It gathers everything that falls on two planes and delivers it to a few feet of trough, and during the kind of burst rainfall that March and April produce here, a 5-inch gutter with a 2×3 downspout simply cannot accept it. The overflow you see at the front entry of these homes is almost never a clog. It is a capacity mismatch that was built in. Six-inch K-style on the loaded runs paired with 3×4 downspouts roughly doubles what the system can move, and a valley diverter or an added outlet handles the rest.

Height changes the service picture too. A gutter twenty feet up over a sloped flowerbed is not a homeowner ladder job, and it is not a job for a crew working off an extension ladder set on soft ground either. Two-story work costs more because it takes more setup, and any estimate that prices a two-story elevation the same as a ranch has not accounted for the day.

After Hail There Are Three Outcomes, Not Two

Homeowners are usually offered a binary choice after a storm, patch it or replace it. There is a third answer in between that gets skipped by contractors who only sell replacements, and on Arlington’s older stock it is frequently the correct one.

Patch the damage when the system is otherwise sound

Damage is isolated to one or two runs, the seams are dry, the fasteners are holding, and the existing gutter is already the correct size for the roof. Resealing a miter, swapping a crushed downspout, and clearing granule sludge is a half-day of work and does not justify tearing off a functional system. Reset the geometry when the metal is fine but the hang is not

What installation day looks like

Aluminum, Steel, or Something Heavier in a Hail Belt City?

No gutter is hail-proof, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The realistic goal is a system that takes a beating cosmetically without losing its hang, its slope, or its watertightness. That is a question of material and of how the run is fastened, and the fastening matters at least as much as the metal.

Aluminum is the standard for good reasons. It does not rust, it takes a baked finish that holds color for decades, it is light enough to hang on old fascia, and it is the least expensive option per foot. It also dents, and in Arlington it will dent. Heavier-gauge aluminum resists impressions noticeably better than the thin stock some price-driven installers use, and the difference in material cost across a whole house is small compared to the difference in how it looks in five years.

Do gutter guards help or hurt in a hail belt?

Guards are worth a separate thought in Arlington because the storm environment cuts both ways. The case for them is granules. A fine mesh keeps shingle grit out of the trough, which is the specific debris that causes trouble here, and on a house with mature trees over the roof it also does the job guards are normally bought for. The case against them is that a guard is one more surface that hail lands on. A thin aluminum screen can be driven down into the trough by large stones, and a flattened guard is worse than no guard because it blocks the opening it was meant to protect.

If you want guards on a house in a high-impact area, the product needs a rigid frame rather than a thin drop-in insert, and it needs to be installed so it can be removed for service without pulling the roof edge apart. Debris and hail interact in a way that is specific to Arlington. My gutters are dented but still draining. Do I have to replace them?

No. Cosmetic denting on the flat surfaces of a trough does not affect performance. What affects performance is a deformed front bead, an opened seam, a pulled fastener, or a crushed downspout. If none of those are present, you have a gutter that looks worse than it works, and you are free to leave it alone until you have another reason to replace it.

How soon after a hailstorm should I have someone look?

Leaving it through a wet spring means standing water sitting against the back of the gutter and the top of the fascia for months. Do you take the old gutters with you?

Yes. Tear-off and disposal are in the price on every replacement we quote, including the old leaders, the straps and the spikes pulled out of the fascia. On a single-story ranch the tear-off usually takes less time than the forming does, because a low run comes down in whole lengths instead of being cut apart on a ladder.

Why is there sand in the bottom of my gutters?

It is not sand. It is the mineral granule surface off your asphalt shingles, loosened by impact and carried down by the next rain. A light amount is normal shedding on any roof. A heavy layer after a specific storm tells you the roof took a hit. That is useful information to have when you are deciding what else on the house needs attention.

Can you match the color of my existing gutters?

In most cases yes. Baked enamel finishes come in a wide standard range, and matching a run on one elevation to the rest of the house is routine. On houses more than a couple of decades old the original color has usually faded, so a perfect match to weathered material is not always possible, and sometimes redoing a full elevation looks better than blending one run.

Will larger gutters actually stop the overflow at my front door?

If the overflow is a capacity problem rather than a blockage, yes. Moving from 5-inch to 6-inch increases the cross-section of the trough, and moving from a 2×3 downspout to a 3×4 roughly doubles the outflow. The downspout is usually the real constraint. If the overflow only happens after a long dry spell, look at debris first, because the fix there is a cleaning rather than a rebuild.

A section tore loose in the wind and is hanging over my driveway. What now?

Do not pull on it. A partially detached run is still fastened somewhere, usually into fascia, and yanking it takes the wood with it. Call us and we will secure or remove the section, then assess what the rest of the elevation needs once nothing is under tension.
