A gutter guard is a cover fastened to a trough, and on a Dallas house it’s only ever as good as the trough it’s fastened to. Put screen over a run that has lost its fall and you’ve covered up standing water. Put micro-mesh over hangers pulling out of soft fascia and you’ve added weight to a run already on its way down.
Which guard and which brand matters a good deal less than most sales pitches suggest. We fit two products across Dallas and the counties around it, expanded steel screen and micro-mesh, and the pricing for both sits near the top of this page. What decides whether either one works on your house is the condition of the gutter underneath and the care taken fastening them.
This page is about the fitting: how a cover fastens, what the gutter needs putting right first, and what the finished work costs by the foot. The two products are set out below with the pricing. The Two Products We Put a Ladder Up For
We install two products and no others, which keeps the conversation short and honest.
Expanded steel screen, sold as Roll Lock, is the straightforward one. It’s a rigid sheet of expanded metal that runs the length of the trough, with the front edge locking under the gutter’s front lip and the back edge sitting on the rear of the trough or under the roof edge. It stops leaves, twigs, husks and the larger material and lets water through the openings. It goes on from $5 per linear foot, and on a house under mostly large-leaf canopy it does the great majority of the work for a fraction of the cost of anything finer.
Micro-mesh is the other. A woven stainless or aluminum mesh, fine enough to stop shingle grit and seed, carried on a rigid frame that fastens to the trough. It handles the small debris that walks straight through a screen: cedar elm samaras, live oak catkins, pine needle, granule off the roof. It starts at $10 per linear foot. Names you’ll have come across include Leaf Blaster, Hydroflow and Flow Shield, and the mesh grade and the rigidity of the frame matter more than the badge on the box.
The Covers We Turn Down, and What Fastening Them Costs You
Two more kinds of gutter guard get sold hard across this metro and we install neither. Knowing what they are is worth knowing before you take anybody’s quote.
Reverse curve covers, sold as surface tension or helmet-style guards, work on the principle that water clings to a curved surface and follows it around a lip into a narrow slot while leaves carry on over the edge. The physics is real and it does work on the right roof. The trouble here is that surface tension needs the rain to arrive at a rate the slot can take, and a North Texas downpour arrives faster than that, so water overshoots the opening and sheets off the front. The slot itself loads up with shingle grit and cedar elm seed, and clearing it means taking the cover off. Most reverse curve systems also fasten under the first course of shingles, which is a roof warranty problem in its own right.
Brush guards are the cylindrical bristle inserts that drop into the trough with no fastening at all. They’re cheap and they’re quick, and they catch and hold precisely what you were trying to keep out. Leaf and catkin wind into the bristles, and clearing one means pulling every length out of the gutter, washing it on the ground and putting it back. Foam inserts fail the same way and break down in the sun on top of it.
We don’t fit hinged guards or heavier-gauge covers either. If a quote you’re holding names a product that’s neither expanded steel screen nor micro-mesh, ask the company which of the two it actually is, because most invented product names turn out to be one of them. Three questions settle most of it. Ask how the back edge is fastened, ask what happens when the slot or the mesh loads with fine debris, and ask who takes the cover off when the gutter underneath needs work.
Putting the Gutter Right Before Anything Covers It
Guards get sold as a solution to gutter problems, which is backwards. They solve one problem, debris entering the trough. Every other complaint people bring us gets worse under a cover, because a cover makes the gutter harder to see and harder to reach. A run that stands water still stands water with screen over it, and now the silt is out of sight. A trough too narrow for the roof above it overflows just the same, and the owner spends two years blaming the guard. An undersized outlet still throttles the whole elevation. Soft fascia still can’t hold a screw, and now it has a little more weight hanging off it.
So the gutter gets gone over first and the corrections get quoted with the guard, not discovered halfway through the day. Fall gets checked by running water down each elevation and watching where it travels, and any stretch that pools gets re-pitched before it’s covered. Hangers come next, because a guard adds a little weight and a lot of leverage in wind, and any fastener that turns without biting gets replaced. Where the original spacing was too wide for the span, more hangers go in.
Miters, end caps and outlets get resealed where the sealant has gone brittle, since those are the points you least want to reach through a cover, and outlets get sized against the elevation feeding them. The fascia gets probed properly, because everything above it depends on it, and where carpentry is needed it happens before anything else.
Plenty of houses need none of that and the guard goes straight on. Knowing which house you have is the point of the estimate. Matching the Guard to What Falls on Your Roof
Choose by species, not by budget, because the wrong product costs more than the right one over ten years.
Expanded steel screen suits a roof under large-leaf trees where the debris arrives in pieces bigger than the openings. Where there’s heavy leaf drop in October and November from hackberry, ash and elm, a screen keeps the mass of it out of the trough and the smaller material washes through and flushes down the drops.
Micro-mesh earns its price where the debris is small. Cedar elm seeds in September and October, releasing flat samaras small enough to pass a screen and pack down wet in the bottom of a trough. Live oak sheds catkins in late winter and spring, stringy things that mat over an outlet with real determination. Pine needle does the same, and a roof that has taken hail sheds granule for months afterward.
Pecan is a case of its own. A mature pecan drops catkins, leaflets, twigs, husks and shell across most of the year, and the mix is both large and small, so micro-mesh is the sensible specification with the understanding that it will need its surface kept clear.
Some houses end up with both, screen on the elevations under the big trees and mesh on the side where a valley discharges under a live oak. Nothing says one house gets one product.
How a Guard Fastens, and Why Going Under the Shingle Is a Problem
This is the part worth understanding before you sign anything, because it’s where a cheap guard installation can cost you a roof warranty.
The safe methods attach the guard to the gutter and nothing else. The front edge locks under the front lip, and the back edge rests on the back wall of the trough or is secured there with clips or short fasteners. Nothing goes through the roof deck, nothing lifts a shingle, and the guard comes off and goes back on for maintenance without the roof being touched.
The method to be careful about slides the back edge of the guard up under the first course of shingles, sometimes with fasteners driven through into the deck. It’s quick, it makes a tidy line, and plenty of installers do it as standard. What it also does is break the factory seal strip that holds that shingle course down, lift the course out of plane, and create penetrations at the most exposed edge of the roof. Most roofing manufacturers take a dim view of anything fastened through their product by another trade, and a good many roofers will point at it the moment a leak turns up near an eave.
If your roof is under warranty, ask any guard company you speak to how the back edge is being secured and get the answer in writing. On our jobs we fasten to the gutter wherever the roof edge allows it, and where a particular roof genuinely calls for something different, we tell you exactly what’s proposed and why before anybody gets on a ladder.
Fitting Day, Start to Finish
A guard job is shorter than an installation and it is not a five-minute one either. Most houses run half a day to a full day depending on footage, height and how much correcting the gutter needs first.
The trough gets cleared before anything else, along the whole run, because covering debris is the one mistake nobody can undo without taking the guard back off. Downspouts get flushed at the same time and any blockage in an elbow gets cleared while it’s easy to reach.
Then anything the gutter needs gets put right, in the order set out above, before a cover goes anywhere near it. After that the guard goes on run by run, cut at corners and mitered where two runs meet so there’s no gap at the place debris collects hardest. Valleys get particular attention, since a valley delivers a concentrated stream at speed onto a short stretch of covered gutter, and how that spot is handled is often the difference between a system that works and one that sheets over the front.
At the end, a hose goes on the roof and every elevation gets run with you watching. Water going in through the guard and out of the downspout is the only test that means anything. Offcuts and packaging go on the trailer, beds get walked, and nothing gets left behind.
What Guard Installation Costs
Guards are priced per linear foot of gutter covered, and both figures below are starting points. What moves a job up its range is height, the number of corners and valleys, the roof covering, and whatever the gutter underneath needs before anything can go on top of it.

Corrective work on the existing gutter starts at a $250 minimum charge, as does the clear-out that precedes fitting. Gutter work carries its own $500 minimum. Downspouts, copper, half-round and oversized profiles are set out in full on our gutter styles and materials page.
Guard footage matches gutter footage, so for a rough number: around 150 to 200 linear feet at 1,500 square feet, 200 to 300 at 2,500, and 350 or more past 3,500. Covering only the elevations sitting under trees brings that down a long way, and on plenty of houses that’s the sensible spend.
Walking the Roofline Before Anything Gets Quoted
Guard work is quoted off a roofline, not off a square footage. Somebody comes out and goes elevation by elevation with a tape, and there are more variables than people expect.
- Linear feet per elevation, measured separately. Guard is priced by the foot, and it’s common for a house to want it on two elevations and not all four, because the trees are only on one side of the lot.
- Trough width and profile. Guard is sized to what it sits on. Five-inch and six-inch K-style take different widths, and half-round is a different fitting again because there’s no flat front lip to lock into.
- Corners, valleys and transitions. Every inside and outside corner is a cut and a joint in the guard run, and a valley discharging onto a covered gutter is the hardest spot on the whole house to get right.
- Roof pitch and covering. A steep roof throws water off the edge with speed behind it, and water moving fast can skip clean over a fine mesh instead of soaking into it. Tile and standing seam metal change the fitting entirely.
- The roof edge and drip edge. Where the first shingle course sits, how far it overhangs, and whether drip edge was fitted over the fascia or behind it all decide which fastening method is available.
- What’s actually growing over the roof. Species, height and how close the canopy sits to the eave. This is the single biggest input into which product goes on.
You get a written figure broken out by elevation, so you can see what covering the back of the house costs against covering the front, and decide whether both are worth doing.
Guards on a Gutter That Is Already Up
Most guard work we do is retrofit, on a system that has been on the house for years, and it’s perfectly normal work as long as the run underneath has life in it.
The question we ask is whether the gutter has another decade in it, because guards are a long-term purchase and there is no sense fitting them to metal with three years left. A sound run on solid fascia at fifteen years old is a fine candidate. A run with fasteners letting go along more than one elevation isn’t, and in that case the money is better spent on the gutter, with guards fitted to the new system. Retrofit also has to deal with what’s already there. Old spike-and-ferrule hanging leaves the front lip in poor shape for a guard to lock into, and a lip deformed by years of scraping gets straightened rather than forced.
Guards Fitted With a New System
Fitting guards at the same time as a new gutter is the cleanest version of this job, and it’s cheaper than doing the two separately because the ladders, the setup and the labor are all already spent.
It also lets the two decisions be made together. Trough width, outlet size and guard type interact: a fine mesh over a five-inch gutter on a steep roof under heavy canopy is asking a lot, where the same mesh over a six-inch trough with a three-by-four drop has room to work. What a Guard Will Do, and What It Will Not
Guards reduce how often a gutter needs clearing. They don’t end it, and any company telling you they will is selling rather than advising.
What they genuinely deliver is worth having. They stop the packed clog, the one where a trough fills solid and sends a sheet of water over the front edge in the middle of a storm. They keep the weight of a season’s leaves off the hangers. They stop the trough becoming a seed bed, which is a real thing on shaded elevations here. And they make the difference between two or three clears a year and a much longer interval.
What they won’t do is remove the need to look. Screen lets fine material through, so grit still settles in the bottom of the trough. Mesh keeps almost everything out and needs its own surface kept clear, since mesh loaded with pollen, dust and granule starts shedding water over the face of the gutter and stops taking it in. Wet catkins bridge across the top of either product, and no guard fixes fall, fasteners, sealant or an undersized trough. Our gutter maintenance page sets out what a guarded system needs.
Guards Over Commercial Elevations
On commercial buildings guards are usually a labor decision rather than a debris one. Getting a lift or a crew onto a roofline over a parking lot, a loading area or a public walkway costs real money every time it happens, so cutting the number of clears a year has a straightforward payback.
The fitting questions are the same at more feet. Long runs mean more joints in the guard and more attention to how each length meets the next, and roof access takes a bigger share of the day than the guard does. Commercial installation begins at a $750 minimum, with commercial downspouts from $20 per linear foot against a $300 minimum.
What Happens If a Guard Works Loose
Our workmanship on the fitting is covered for five years, and the guard material itself carries a twenty-year manufacturer warranty. If a length works loose, if a joint at a corner opens up, if something we fastened wasn’t fastened well enough, that’s ours to put right. The family has been working on North Texas rooflines since 1984, out of a shop on Fuller Drive in East Dallas, and we’ve taken off enough badly fitted guard over the years to be particular about how ours goes on.
Where the Canopy Is, and Where We Fit Guard
Guard work concentrates under the old trees. The pecan streets of Preston Hollow and north Oak Cliff, the live oaks through University Park and Bluffview, and the cedar elm and hackberry shading Lakewood, Forest Hills and Mesquite account for most of what we fit inside the city. North of LBJ it’s the established parts of Richardson, Plano and Allen, where a twenty-year canopy has finally grown over the roofline. The five counties are Dallas, Collin, Denton, Rockwall and Tarrant, and where a lot has nothing over the eave but sky, we’ll tell you guards aren’t worth your money.
Questions About Having Guards Fitted
Will you fit guards to the gutters I already have?
Yes, as long as the run has real life left in it. We check fall, fasteners, seals and fascia first and quote any corrections with the guard, since covering a failing gutter helps nobody.
Does the guard go under my shingles?
Not where we can avoid it, and on most houses we can. We fasten to the gutter itself. Lifting the first shingle course breaks its seal strip and can put a roof warranty at risk, and we will not do it without telling you exactly why it’s being proposed.
Does the trough get cleared before the guard goes on?
Always, along the whole run, and the downspouts get flushed on the same visit. Covering debris is the one mistake nobody can undo without taking the guard back off again.
Will I ever have to clean my gutters again?
Yes, less often. Guards stretch the interval a long way and stop the packed clog. Screens pass fine grit into the trough and mesh needs its surface kept clear, so somebody still has to look.
Can guards be taken off if something goes wrong underneath?
Ours can, which is one of the reasons we fasten to the gutter and not into the roof. Panels come off, the work happens, panels go back on.
Do guards cause ice problems in a cold snap?
Not meaningfully here, since our freezes are short. What matters far more is that the trough is clear and the drops are open before a cold front arrives.
Will a guard hold up to hail?
Expanded steel takes a beating well, and micro-mesh on a rigid frame is more resilient than it looks, though severe hail marks anything on a roofline. The bigger post-hail issue is granule loading the mesh surface.
How long does the fitting take?
Half a day to a full day on most houses. Correcting the gutter first, height and corner count are what add time, and we’ll say which applies to yours before we start.
Can I cover just one side of the house?
Yes, and often it’s the right call. If two elevations sit under trees and two sit under open sky, covering all four is money spent for nothing.
What do you do where a valley empties onto a covered run?
That short stretch gets handled on its own terms, because a valley delivers a concentrated stream at speed and a fine mesh can shed it straight over the front. Depending on the roof we open up the outlet under the discharge, add a drop beneath it, or change the product on that one run.
